Public service workers have reached an agreement with the District of Tofino several weeks after hitting an impasse in negotiations around pay.
CUPE 118, which represents 30 district employees, announced Wednesday that the union members reached a memorandum of agreement with the employer following mediation sessions this week.
“The success of this process speaks to the strong relationships we have with our staff and we look forward to continuing to work together for many years to come,” said Nyla Attiana, chief administrative officer for the District of Tofino. “We would like to thank everyone who was involved in successfully concluding negotiations to reach this agreement.”
The agreement was unanimously supported by representatives from both the employer and the union. Both are scheduled to ratify the agreement in July.
The CUPE 118 bargaining unit is made up of 30 members in areas of infrastructure and maintenance, child care, municipal administration, parks and recreation, water and utilities, building inspections, bylaw enforcement, protective services and planning.
The public service workers have been without a contract since June 2020. The workers voted to strike after hitting an impasse in negotiations June 11. At the time, CUPE 118 said representatives were bargaining for a new collective agreement that kept up with rising prices.
