Nanaimo Mounties are looking for the driver of a white truck who drove on a downtown sidewalk and knocked down a streetlamp that struck another vehicle on Tuesday.

The driver, believed to be a man, was headed southbound on Church Street when he made a tight left turn, driving on the sidewalk instead of the road, said Nanaimo RCMP Reserve Const. Gary O’Brien.

The truck drove over the sidewalk and took out a structure before smashing into a streetlamp that hit a vehicle with two occupants, who were not injured, he said. The truck then sped off.

It was seen driving erratically again on Nanaimo River Road, O’Brien said.

“We don’t know what caused it, whether it was drugs, whether it was a medical emergency,” he said.

O’Brien said extensive construction has closed many downtown streets until next spring and the driver may have been annoyed and “trying to do a shortcut.”

Police are asking any witnesses and anyone with dashcam footage in the area from around 1:30 p.m. to contact Nanaimo RCMP’s non-emergency line at 250-754-2345.
