News of a hot car getting cooled off over the weekend by Saanich police did not reach a 52-year-old driver trying to make time on the Trans-Canada Highway.

Saanich police Sgt. Steve Eassie said the driver was clocked going 101 kilometres an hour in a 50-kilometre zone on the highway, near Harriet Road, on Monday. He was in a vehicle described as an older-model muscle car.

His driving earned him a $368 fine and a week-long vehicle impoundment, Eassie said.

That incident followed a separate one on Saturday, when routine speed enforcement on Willis Point Road caught a 39-year-old in a 2012 Mustang travelling at 157 km/h in a 60 km/h zone. That vehicle was also impounded, and the driver given a $483 fine.

Eassie said the drivers of two pickup trucks met a similar result the day before on Willis Point Road, which has a long, straight stretch known to attract speeders. Both were found to be going 105 km/h in a 60 km/h zone.

Speeds that exceed the posted limit by more than 40 km/h are considered “excessive” and lead to both a fine and impoundment. — Times Colonist
