Two people escaped uninjured Monday afternoon when a plane crashed and caught fire while landing at Qualicum Beach Airport.

The Transportation Safety Board said it was told the landing gear collapsed on the plane, which it identified as a privately registered Globe Aircraft Corp. GC-1B.

Friso McKenzie, deputy chief of Qualicum Beach Fire Rescue, said the plane had a relatively soft landing, scraping along the runway for as much as 12 metres before the fuel ignited.

Some bystanders tried to douse the flames with extinguishers before firefighters arrived, McKenzie said. “Thankfully there wasn’t a lot of fuel involved.”

The plane was destroyed in the crash.

In a statement, TSB said it was still gathering information and had not deployed investigators.
