Two people were in hospital Saturday after a Cessna plane crashed on an embankment and flipped upside-down at the Duncan Airport.
The crash happened at about 1:30 p.m.
Police said the single-engine aircraft had two occupants: a 55-year-old male pilot and a 43-year-old female passenger.
“Both sustained serious injuries and were extricated from the wreckage by emergency crews prior to being transported to area hospitals,” said Cpl. Darren Lagan, spokesman for the Island District RCMP.
“The full extent of their injuries is not known at this time.”
Both people are believed to be residents of southern Vancouver Island, Lagan said.
The pilot was taken by B.C. Ambulance paramedics to Cowichan District Hospital, while the passenger was flown by helicopter to Victoria General Hospital.
Gary O’Brien of the Duncan Flying Club, the group that manages the private airport, said the woman walked away from the plane with assistance.
The two-seater Cessna was believed to be landing when it crashed, O’Brien said. Damage to the plane was substantial.
RCMP investigators were on the scene Saturday, and the Transportation Safety Board was contacted, Lagan said. The cause of the crash is not known.
The airport, which is open seven days a week and used for training and recreational flying, was closed until 5 p.m.
