Two people were sent to hospital following a six-car crash on the Trans-Canada Highway near Helmcken Road on Tuesday morning.

View Royal Fire Chief Paul Hurst said the firefighters responded to the crash shortly before 9:50 a.m. and assisted in extricating two elderly occupants from a vehicle.

The two were taken to nearby Victoria General Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, he said, adding that others involved in the crash were not injured.

The highway’s southbound lanes were closed for about an hour while emergency responders cleared the scene.

While RCMP are still investigating the cause of the incident, Hurst said it appears a driver was experiencing a medical issue right before he crashed his vehicle.

“He was in an accident, and then a bunch of [other] cars became involved.”
