A 42-year-old man was arrested after a vehicle crashed into a tractor trailer unit, backing up traffic in Colwood on Monday morning.

West Shore RCMP said the man, who was unlicensed at the time of the crash and abandoned his passenger, faces more than $1,200 in fines and a court date in February.

At 6:30 a.m., police attended the scene of the collision near the 1900-block of Sooke Road, where a Toyota Corolla was stuck under the trailer of a delivery truck.

The driver had fled the scene, leaving a 30-year-old female passenger who sustained minor injuries in the vehicle.

Officers located the driver nearby and arrested him for several offences, including flight from police, failure to remain at the scene of a collision and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

He was served a driving prohibition and the vehicle was impounded for seven days, as he was listed as an unlicensed driver.

He was also charged under the Motor Vehicle Act for failure to render assistance to the injured passenger, failure to exchange information with the truck driver, speeding, changing lanes over a solid line and having open liquor in a vehicle.

Because the driver was not at the scene of the crash, police were unable to prove impaired driving, they said.

Cpl. Nancy Saggar said the driver and passenger are lucky to be alive, as the vehicle was fully trapped under the trailer.
