Wearing a mask will be mandatory for people who are not vaccinated for flu and are visiting health-care facilities, starting today, says Island Health.
Influenza is among the top-10 leading causes of death in Canada, estimated to cause about 12,200 hospitalizations and 3,500 deaths annually, the health authority says. It says getting immunized is the best protection against the flu, along with hand-washing and staying home when sick.
The masks are available near main entrances, hand-washing stations or at reception and admitting counters in hospitals and health facilities.
Island Health also asks people who are ill to refrain from visiting friends and family in its care facilities and long-term care homes until they recover. The flu virus spreads easily between people through breathing, coughing and sneezing.
