Several buildings at the University of Victoria were evacuated due to a gas leak on Ring Road today.
Oak Bay and Saanich fire departments were called to the scene about 2 p.m. after a line was struck during construction. Fortis B.C. crews were working to isolate the gas leak and repair the damaged line, according to a post on UVic’s website.
The leak closed the Interfaith Chapel, interrupting a memorial service. The Phoenix Theatre, the Fine Arts Building and the Visual Arts Building were evacuated as a precaution but are expected to reopen after 4 p.m.
Traffic and buses were rerouted on Ring Road at entrance to Parking Lot 6 by the Fine Arts Building.
The leak also closed parking lots 6 and E.
