UVic and the union representing sessional instructors have reached a new three-year collective agreement that includes wage increases and potential cost-of-living adjustments.

Like other public-sector agreements, this one falls under the province’s shared recovery mandate featuring protection from inflation.

So far, ratified and tentative agreements have been reached under the shared recovery mandate that cover more than 230,000 public sector employees.

As well as sessional instructors, Local 4163 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees represents music performance instructors and practicum supervisors, for a total of about 830 members.

The deal runs from May 1 of this year to April 30, 2025, the province said in a Wednesday statement.

In the first year, there’s a flat increase of $0.25 per cent per hour, plus a wage increase of 3.24 per cent.

The second year brings a 5.5 per cent increase, as well as a potential cost-of-living hike up to 6.75 per cent.

Year three will see a two per cent increase, plus a possible cost of living boost up to a maximum of three per cent.

There is also the possibility of another wage boost to a maximum of up to 0.25 per cent in years one and two.

Other changes in the agreement include streamlining administrative and appointment processes and embedding commitments to inclusion and reconciliation.
