Victoria Police Chief Jamie Graham says the discipline authorities "have to determine a wide variety of what the circumstances are ... There's so many variables.”

The Victoria Police Board has taken a step toward finding a replacement for Chief Jamie Graham by hiring an executive-search company.

Vancouver-based Pinton Forrest & Madden will work with the board.

Graham, 64, is retiring at the end of 2013, when his five-year contract expires. Victoria Mayor Dean Fortin, the police board chairman, said the board will look both inside and outside the police department for the next chief.

Fortin said the board and the search company will be meeting soon to talk about the selection process.

“The next step is to sit down with [the company] and discuss the parameters of the search: What are the qualifications? What is the type of person that we’re looking for?”

Fortin said the company has a range of experience finding executive candidates, including police chiefs.
