Port Alberni RCMP dealt with four traffic incidents Sunday night in the space of about 30 minutes, including one where a car went through the glass front of a Canadian Tire store and another where a woman was struck by a car.
Three vehicles were impounded.
Police arrested a man in his 20s for impaired driving in connection with the crash at the Canadian Tire store on Johnston Street. The driver was given a driving prohibition and had his car impounded. He is scheduled for a court appearance in 2024.
It all started at about 6:10 p.m., when officers spotted a vehicle being driven at a high rate of speed on Stamp Avenue, clocking it at 97 km/h in a 50 km/h zone.
The driver was stopped several blocks away and fined for excessive speed, and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.
That was followed by the crash at Canadian Tire. Minutes later, police responded to a report of a car hitting a parked vehicle on 9th Avenue and gave the driver a blood-alcohol test, which she failed.
The woman, in her 40s, was issued an immediate 90-day roadside driving prohibition and had her vehicle impounded.
Next was a call about a female being struck by a vehicle on Redford Street.
Witnessed told police there were two vehicles at the scene whose occupants knew each other. The two left the scene together after one was involved in the incident.
No one from either of the vehicles checked on the victim.
The suspect vehicle is described as a smaller car and the other was reportedly a white SUV.
The victim was taken to hospital by paramedics for treatment of minor injuries and released several hours later.
Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call Port Alberni RCMP at 250-723-2424.
It is extremely concerning to see this behavior from so many drivers in such a short period of time,
said Const. Richard Johns. Impaired-driving laws are nothing new. If you have consumed liquor, cannabis or other recreational drugs, do not get behind the wheel.
