Victoria will put seven electric vehicle charging stations for public use in five city-owned parkades next spring.
The Centennial Square, Johnson Street and Bastion Square parkades will each have one charging station while the View and Broughton street parkades will each have two.
There will be no additional fee to plug into a charging station.
The charging stations can fully recharge an electric car battery within three to eight hours. Seven charging stations will be available for public use.
The city also plans to install three stations for charging the municipal fleet at the parks maintenance office and yard, the public works yard and at city hall in the Centennial Square parkade.
The bulk of the funding for the stations is coming from the province's $2.7-million Community Charging Infrastructure Fund, which covers up to 75 per cent of the capital and installation costs to a maximum of $4,000 per charging point.
City spokeswoman Katie Josephson said the estimated cost to the municipality is about $20,000.
