Victoria police arrested a man with a knife Wednesday night after he “aggressively” followed a woman.

Police were called to the area of Cook Street and Rockland Avenue just before 9 p.m. for a report that a man was trailing a woman while he yelled and hit garbage cans.

The woman called 911 and ran, then found a bystander nearby to take her to safety.

Officers arrived and located a suspect. The knife was found when they searched him.

The suspect is not permitted to have any kind of weapons, stemming from a 2020 assault case in which he randomly struck a man with a wooden stick.

He was taken to hospital due to a medical issue and then held under the Mental Health Act.

Police are recommending a charge of breach of probation.

Such cases are given the highest priority, police said, advising people who feel unsafe to call 911 and get to a public place, if possible.

In a case in Vancouver last month, a woman reported being followed by a man for 40 minutes in the late afternoon as she walked through downtown.
