A Victoria police officer extinguished two deliberately set grass fires on Chatham Street on Saturday.
The patrol officer was flagged down about 6 p.m. and alerted to a rapidly growing grass fire on Chatham near Government Street.
The officer used the fire extinguisher in his police car and called the fire department to attend.
While this was happening, the officer received a report of a second, smaller grass fire in the area, which he also extinguished.
Witnesses told police they had seen a person lighting the fires. A man was arrested at a nearby park later that evening.
Victoria police also responded to a report of a small explosion around 8 a.m. Saturday in the 1900-block of Douglas Street.
Witnesses reported hearing a loud bang and saw an explosion near the front doors of a building. The flames were quickly extinguished.
A man was arrested later that day.
