Peart is well known for his role in the establishment and management of B.C.’s park system and the designation of land-use plans throughout the province.
He has been the Canadian leader in a movement to get children and families outdoors, into nature.
“I am really excited about the future of Sierra Club B.C. under Bob Peart’s leadership,” said Doug McArthur, chairman of the board.
“He is easily the most highly respected environmental leader in the province.”
Mark Haddock of the Environmental Law Centre at the University of Victoria, praised the appointment: “Sierra Club is extremely fortunate to have someone of the calibre of Bob Peart take on its leadership. There is no one I know more qualified and able to do this job.”
Peart said in a statement that he looks forward to working with government, business and industry officials “as we search for a positive future that conserves B.C.’s biodiversity, addresses the huge problems associated with ever growing carbon emissions and supports appropriate economic development.”
“I also look forward to the strong education role that the Sierra Club will have in the effort to re-engage youth with nature, and in creating a positive vision for the future.”
Peart will begin work Oct. 15.
