A recent cougar sighting in Brentwood Bay is prompting police to issue fresh warnings to the public.

Central Saanich police spotted a cougar near Greig Avenue on Sunday night.

Conservation officers have been notified about the sighting, police said in a statement posted on social media.

Police are advising residents to take caution when out late or early in the morning.

Ryan Worsfold, co-owner of Eurosa Farms on Greig Avenue, said he isn’t too worried.

“It’s not unusual for them to be seen in the area. I mean, there’s a ton of deer,” he said.

The farm’s sheep have avoided predation this year, he said, adding that cougars tend to prefer deer over sheep.

In the event of a cougar encounter, the B.C. Conservation Officer Service advises keeping the animal in front of you at all times. Do not run or turn your back.

If a cougar shows interest or begins following you, respond with aggression and maintain eye contact. Increase your profile by raising your hands, the service says.

Cougar sightings can be reported to the Conservation Officer Service at 1-877-952-RAPP (7277).
