After several recent incidents of young people finding plastic baggies containing possible drug residue, Nanaimo RCMP have issued some basic safety tips about proper handling and disposal.
A pouch containing the powerful opioid fentanyl was recently found on the grounds of École Quarterway Elementary in Nanaimo, and parent volunteers doing a safety check a few days later located a needle and traces of more drugs.
Drugs currently being used on the streets are toxic, and could cause a severe or even life-threatening reaction if mishandled or accidentally inhaled, said Reserve Const. Gary O’Brien.
Drug paraphernalia such as glass pipes, tin foil and needles have also been found.
Police tips include:
• Never pick up discarded drug items unless you are wearing gloves.
• Place any items in a baggie with a seal, and if possible discard them in a garbage bag and tie it shut so they can’t be seen.
• Tell young children to never pick up these items and to tell an adult as soon as possible after they are found.
• If you are using a tool or something that may be used again to get at an item, be sure to decontaminate it.
Police officers do not necessarily have to be called to dispose of these items, but they are available to answer any questions.
While drug users are allowed small quantities of street-level drugs under a three-year provincial pilot project that began in January, that doesn’t apply to school grounds and playgrounds, police said.
Anyone who suspects someone has illegal drugs in such areas is asked to call Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345.
