The Old Man Lake wildfire, which scorched 230 hectares of forest and steep terrain near the Sooke Potholes and within five kilometres of Greater Victoria’s main water supply, is now listed as under control.

The B.C. Wildfire Service said while the fire is not projected to spread any farther, it’s still an active wildfire and crews continue to work in the area.

The agency said initial attack crews and a helicopter will continue with “sustained action” until the fire is declared out.

The fire, discovered on July 22, did not affect any structures, but triggered an evacuation of Spring Salmon Place campground and closed several nearby parks and trails, including Sea to Sea and Sooke Potholes regional parks, access points to Kapoor Regional Park and the Galloping Goose Regional Trail northbound at kilometre 46, just south of the Todd Creek Trestle.

“This fire requires sustained action, and B.C. Wildfire crews and aviation resources will be working on it for the foreseeable future,” the CRD said in a statement.
