A wildfire reported west of Shawnigan Lake early Tuesday afternoon was likely human caused, says the B.C. Wildfire Service.

Two attack crews have responded to the blaze near the end of Rebecca Road at McGee Creek and were fighting what was described as a “low-vigour ground fire” in a former cut block of slash.

A spokesman with the Coastal Wildfire Centre said the fire had burned an area measuring 40 metres by 40 metres and was listed as out of control.

He said the cause is under investigation but is believed to be human caused.

“There have been no reports of any lightning,” he said.

Heavy equipment is in the area to help fight the fire, the spokesman said.
