B.C’s police-oversight agency is asking for witnesses to a 2018 arrest in the Comox Valley that led to a female youth being injured.

In the case under investigation by the Independent Investigations Office, Comox Valley RCMP said that the female youth was arrested in front of the liquor store in the Comox Centre Mall, 215 Port Augusta Street, just before 5 p.m. on Jan. 3, 2018. Police believed she would have been at risk if not apprehended, said the IIO in a press release Thursday.

Police notified the IIO about the incident on Feb. 21, 2023, three months after the youth filed a civil claim on Nov. 21, 2022 that included allegations she suffered serious injuries during her arrest by police.

Initial investigative steps have examined the level of injury the youth sustained and the details of the arrest and subsequent detention.

The IIO, a civilian-led operation that looks into police-related incidents involving death or serious harm, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing. is asking anyone with relevant information or video footage of the incident to please contact the Witness Line toll-free at 1-855-446-8477 or use the contact form on the iiobc.ca website.
