Work was set to begin Monday on improvements to Highway 19A near Parksville, including a new 190-metre multi-use pathway for pedestrians and cyclists.

To make room for the path, a new right-turn lane on Resort Drive is being built, replacing the northbound on-ramp from Resort Drive, says the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure.

New signs with directions to businesses and Rathtrevor Beach Provincial Park are also coming, while transit stops will see additional maintenance and improvements.

Work runs from Mondays until Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. No work will be carried out on Sundays, the ministry said.

During construction periods, the highway will have single-lane alternating traffic between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Delays could be up to 10 minutes, the ministry said.

The Resort Drive on-ramp into Rathtrevor Beach Provincial Park will be closed for about three weeks while work is underway. During that time, traffic will be rerouted through a short detour via Resort Way.

Work is expected to be completed by November, the ministry said.
