Body of missing fisherman and First Nations elder found

The body of a missing 80-year-old Ahousaht man was found on Saturday. The death of Harry Lucas, an elder and fisherman of the Hesquiaht and Hupacasath nations, was confirmed by Judith Sayers, president of the Nuu-chah-nulth council.

The death of Harry Lucas, an elder and fisherman of the Hesquiaht and Hupacasath nations, was confirmed by Judith Sayers, president of the Nuu-chah-nulth council.

“He is with the ancestors. We thank the Creator for his life & contributions,” she said in a message on Twitter.

Lucas had left the Ahousaht area alone in his boat on Thursday and failed to return as expected a few hours later.

A missing person alert was sent out on Thursday night.

Crews on Coast Guard and private vessels conducted a search of the Ahousaht, Flores Island and Hot Springs Cove areas.

His body was found in the Hot Springs Cove area after debris was spotted.
