An unoccupied Saanich house was destroyed in a fire Sunday evening, but firefighters were able to prevent the blaze from spreading to nearby homes.
Firefighters from Oak Bay and Saanich responded to the fire in the 2400 block of Trent Street, near Fort Street and Foul Bay Road. The alarm was raised at about 8 p.m.
The house, which was being renovated, was unoccupied. When firefighters arrived, the building was engulfed in flames, so crews concentrated on preventing the fire from spreading to other homes.
Twenty-four firefighters spent at least four hours putting the fire out and many more monitoring and dousing hot spots.
Damage estimates are in the hundreds of thousands since the structure is no longer viable.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
