Sooke, Metchosin and Otter Point firefighters made short work of a chimney fire at the 17 Mile House Pub Tuesday afternoon.
“When we arrived on scene there were staff members on the roof trying to deal with it,” said Sooke Fire Chief Kenn Mount. “We had reports from patrons and passersby that there were heavy flames coming out of the top of the chimney. We made sure the fire was properly suppressed.”
Mount said it took quite a bit of effort to make sure the fire was out because there was a lot of heat in the old masonry chimney. “We stayed there quite a long time to be confident that the heat was declining,” he said.
The manager of the building was put on fire watch to make sure the temperature continues to come down, Mount said.
Sooke firefighters used their aerial truck to get to the chimney. Firefighters passed water through the chimney eight or nine times to extinguish the flames and remove blockages, said the chief.
Patrons and staff were allowed back in to the building about 90 minutes after the fire broke out.
Damage is estimated at less than $1,000. The chimney is in a part of the pub not used by the patrons.
