Drivers eagerly waiting for their one-time COVID-19 rebate cheques from ICBC will have to wait a bit longer. On Wednesday, the Insurance Corp. of B.C. said it is delaying mail-out of the cheques because of a cyberattack on a third-party vendor that provides ICBC with printing and distribution services.

The cheques were to be mailed starting this week, but ICBC said those plans are on hold after the vendor informed it of the attack. No cheques have been issued so far.

ICBC said the vendor had access to customer names, addresses, COVID-19 rebate cheque amounts, and cheque numbers, but there is no indication this information was obtained by the hackers. The cyberattack did not affect ICBC’s systems.

ICBC said it believes the delay will be minimal and cheques will be issued “in the coming weeks.”

ICBC is issuing the one-time rebates to customers after it saved $600 million due to a significant decrease in crashes and costs since the pandemic began.
