Victoria police arrested a man with a violent criminal history within two hours of his release on probation.
Police said the man has more than 70 criminal convictions for such offences as random assaults, assault with a weapon, assault causing bodily harm and assaulting a police officer.
The crimes include injuring several correctional staff with a makeshift weapon in 2019 and violently assaulting a stranger who confronted him for trying door handles in a parking lot in 2020.
Officers took the unusual step of monitoring the 38-year-old after his Tuesday release because of significant concerns that he would reoffend. The alleged breaches were unspecified.
The man was arrested in the 800 block of Johnson Street, between Blanshard and Quadra streets.
