Umesh Lal, a Nanaimo Fire Rescue inspector, has been honoured with the 2020 Fire Educator of the Year Award from the Fire Prevention Officers of British Columbia.
Lal has been integral in assisting and developing numerous fire safety and education programs in the Nanaimo. These include promoting the home smoke alarm program, working with Snuneymuxw First Nation on fire extinguisher training, teaching fire safety to new Canadians, and doing outreach with School District 68.
“Fire prevention is key to saving lives and property in our city,” said Nanaimo Fire Chief Karen Fry. “I am proud of the work that our department is doing and could not be more pleased for Umesh in his receiving of this recognition.”
