New COVID-19 case linked to outbreak at Nanaimo care home

A second staff member has tested positive for COVID-19 at the Chartwell Malaspina Care Residence in Nanaimo. The new case was detected during a round of mass testing and confirmed on Thursday, Island Health said in a statement.

A second staff member has tested positive for COVID-19 at the Chartwell Malaspina Care Residence in Nanaimo.

The new case was detected during a round of mass testing and confirmed on Thursday, Island Health said in a statement.

A total of seven residents and two staff members have now tested positive since the outbreak was declared on Dec. 26. Two deaths have been linked to the outbreak.

The latest staff member to test positive is in isolation and Island Health says its public health team has finished contact tracing to identify anyone who was potentially exposed to the virus.

The outbreak remains confined to two units on the home’s first floor. The staff member worked on one of those units
