North Saanich councillors have agreed unanimously to a $1.5-million construction project to complete bicycle lanes along West Saanich Road.
Under the proposal, West Saanich Road will be widened for bike paths on the 1.7 kilometres between Frizell and McTavish Roads.
Construction is projected to start in late summer, with completion expected by the end of the year. The contract was awarded to Allterra Construction Ltd., whose bid of $1.524 million was the lowest of three.
Once complete, the bike trail will join with existing bike lanes to provide continuous cycling in both directions on West Saanich Road from McTavish Road to Wain Road.
The project is part of the municipality’s Official Community Plan. It is also recommended in the Regional Pedestrian and Cycling Masterplan of the Capital Regional District.
The municipality planned to spend $1 million on the bike path in its 2019 budget, with money to come from its share of the gas tax. Later, it received a $725,000 grant from BikeBC allowing it cover all the work.
