The Ogden Point breakwater will close as of 7 a.m. Tuesday.
The Greater Victoria Harbour Authority announced Monday that gates and signs would be put up on the structure’s upper walkway.
The decision follows several instances of walkers not following social-distancing guidelines — keeping one to two metres away from others — on avoiding the spread of COVID-19.
Signs will be also be posted on the lower oceanfront level of the breakwater telling people to avoid the area.
Every year about 450,000 people head out along the breakwater.
Despite the warnings about distancing to, “we unfortunately didn’t see those numbers slow down,” said Ian Robertson, chief executive of the Harbour Authority.
“While it is a difficult decision to close a space that Victorians love, this is in the best interest of our collective health and safety, and our requirement to help flatten the curve.”
