Thomas Bechard, the president and CEO of Powerex, the energy-trading arm of B.C. Hydro, is the highest-paid public executive in British Columbia, according to numbers released Thursday by the B.C. government. Bechard, who has served as the Powerex boss since December 2017, is pulling in just over $938,000 in salary, expenses and bonuses this year.

B.C.'s Public Sector Employers Act requires public disclosure of an organization's CEO/president and the next four highest-ranking or highest-paid executives with decision-making authority, earning an annualized base salary of $125,000 or more during a fiscal year.

Four of the top 10 highest earners are university executives. University of Victoria president and vice-chancellor James Cassels is ninth on the list with a total compensation package of just over $430,000.
