In defence of dandelions

I have always been baffled by the fact that so many people enjoy destroying the small, beautiful yellow flower called the dandelion. As kids we all enjoyed blowing dandelion seeds, but grown-ups always frowned on us.

I have always been baffled by the fact that so many people enjoy destroying the small, beautiful yellow flower called the dandelion. As kids we all enjoyed blowing dandelion seeds, but grown-ups always frowned on us.

But the last few years we have heard that many of our bees have slowly diminished. Who is responsible? Humans, of course. But never too late to give a helping hand.

Now we are told by experts that the dandelion flowers are bees' most important flowers in their survival.

What is more important? Having an

immaculate green lawn by killing all the dandelions or having more delicious honey with our morning toast? Let's not forget that if bees survive the winter, the first spring flower to bloom, the dandelion, will save the bees from starvation by giving them their first source of nectar.

We might not see dandelion honey for sale, but it gives the bees a huge boost and help the health and well-being of the hive.

Do we really need to have the perfect, green manicured lawn, by destroying every little yellow flower, welcoming our best friends, the bees? You decide.
