Hikers set off on the West Coast Trail near Bamfield. Letter-writers suggest that complaints about the condition of the trail are unfounded, as hiking the route is a wilderness experience that requires planning and preparation.

Last week, I hiked the West Coast Trail for the second year in a row; each time in the company of one of my teenage daughters.

It is true there are extensive portions of rotting boardwalks, but one either avoids them entirely or walks on the edges where underlying rails are located. The trail was in better shape this year than last, with some bridge improvements as well as new ladders, platforms and sections of boardwalk.

That said, there are plenty of places on the trail that have to be treated with caution and respect, especially in wet weather. But that is all part of the experience of hiking the beautiful yet rugged West Coast Trail, and as the article accurately implies, each time we came off the trail thinking: "That was incredible!"
