Cool Aid’s latest project is redefining how supportive housing services are delivered in Victoria.
This bold initiative by Cool Aid aims to create a vibrant, inclusive community where residents and neighbours can thrive together, supported by a continuum of care that fosters both stability and well-being.
A holistic approach to care and healing
The Crosstown development will feature 154 homes, including 100 affordable, low-end-of-market units, alongside 54 supportive housing units. Crosstown is also a community hub designed to address multiple challenges all under one roof.
With the addition of a second community health clinic, a daycare operated by Beacon Community Services, and wellness programming, the project will connect residents to vital resources and opportunities for personal growth.
“This project was inspired by the need for accessible and integrated services for marginalized people in our community,” says Alyson Dahl, director of philanthropy and community engagement for Cool Aid.
“Crosstown provides not only homes, but also physical and mental health care, nutritious meals and creative spaces, ensuring residents have the support they need to thrive.”
Addressing challenges with accessible services
Crosstown responds to the pressing issues faced by those experiencing homelessness or precarious living situations in Victoria. Many individuals struggle with fragmented services and feel overwhelmed navigating complex care systems.
Crosstown eliminates these barriers by offering primary care, mental health services and wellness programming in one location.
“We have created a space where people will feel connected and supported within a community of caring neighbours,” Dahl says.
“It’s not just about housing; it’s about fostering a sense of belonging and inclusion.”
The Dr. Joe Haegert Community Health Centre will be a critical part of the project, offering trauma-informed care to address complex health challenges including addiction, mental health and chronic illness.
“Providing health care in this environment also reduces the burden on emergency rooms and the already-taxed system,” Dahl explains.
Creating spaces for growth and connection
The inclusion of other unique elements like art maker spaces and communal areas will add to Crosstown’s dynamic environment. These spaces encourage interaction among all residents, breaking down stigma and building meaningful relationships.
“The art maker space will offer more than creative expression — it’s a place for personal growth, healing, and coming together for residents and the surrounding community,” Dahl says.
Additionally, the on-site daycare will address a critical need in Victoria, providing working parents with access to affordable childcare.
“People struggling to make ends meet need an affordable place to live, but they also need the supports necessary to earn a living,” Dahl says. “Having access to both in one building is bound to make life easier for working families.”
Community support to complete the vision
Though the walls of Crosstown are up, Cool Aid needs additional support to finish the final phases. The Crosstown capital campaign aims to raise $1.5 million to complete the health clinic and fully implement wellness programming.
A generous matching donor has already pledged $100,000, meaning every dollar donated will have twice the impact.
“We’re asking the community to help us complete this vision and provide a lasting resource for those who need it most,” Dahl says.
“Supporting Crosstown is about investing in people, dignity for everyone, and the future of our community as a whole. Together, through innovative projects like Crosstown, we can create healthier, more inclusive communities where everyone has the chance to thrive.”
