Habitat for Humanity Victoria is seeking 100 more donors to match the $100,000 raised so far for its $200K in 100 Days campaign. This ambitious fundraising target will help the charity give 11 local families a hand up as they realize their dreams of affordable homeownership.
The campaign started in late June and is set to conclude on Sept. 30.
The charity builds affordable, entry-level homes for qualifying families throughout the region. Donors are considered the key to a brighter future for many hard-working families who are struggling during these difficult times to provide safe, stable housing as well as other necessities for themselves and their children.
Recent events have highlighted just how important a safe and stable home can be. The uncertainty we have all experienced this year is the ongoing reality for many families coping with housing instability.
The proceeds from this fundraising campaign will go toward construction costs arising from current builds around the Capital Region.
This year’s build projects are the most ambitious undertaken by the organization, with 11 new, affordable homes now under construction.
Ten of those are townhouse units located at Bakerview Place and Lochside Drive in North Saanich. There is also a single family home in Central Saanich.
The Bakerview project represents the most significant land donation in Habitat for Humanity Victoria’s history. The project features a combination of duplexes and triplexes being constructed to Built Green standards. The units will consist of 2, 3 and 4 bedroom homes, with two designed to be wheelchair-friendly.
Habitat for Humanity Victoria believes that homeownership builds strength, stability and independence. The organization partners with families who are ready for the responsibility and challenges of homeownership, including the financial commitment. These families work with Habitat and skilled trades people to build their own home and purchase it at fair market value.
Future homeowners currently completing their volunteer service hours with Habitat include drivers, caregivers, lab technicians, construction workers and educators. Many of them provide the essential services we all rely on in our local community. Habitat Victoria provides the affordable financing piece by establishing mortgage payments that are no more than 30 per cent of the family's gross income.
This Homeownership Program is available to families from all cultures and faiths without discrimination. Hundred per cent of your donation will go towards the construction of these 11 homes.
