In the face of rising rates of degenerative diseases that affect cognitive function, new technologies are showing that brain health can not only be maintained, it can also be improved.
January is Alzheimer's Awareness Month. According to a study released in September 2022 by the Alzheimer Society of Canada, 85,800 British Columbians live with dementia and up to 247,300 people could be diagnosed with the disease by 2050.
If you or your loved one is living with a brain disorder such as dementia, Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s, or even common afflictions such as depression or anxiety, you’ve likely asked, “Are there any effective, non-pharmaceutical treatments that could help mitigate disease progression or positively affect my mental health?”
The short answer is—yes, thanks to new high-tech solutions available at Victoria-based RegenClinic, which use photobiomodulation (PBM) to treat neurological conditions, and other conditions as well.
THOR Laser: recognized leader in PBM equipment and clinical support
“Among its many applications, PBM has shown in numerous clinical trials that it can improve brain function, and has been extensively studied as a treatment for brain injuries, stroke, and neurological conditions including dementia,” explains Sasha Zhang, managing director, RegenClinic.
RegenClinic administers treatments using sophisticated NovoTHOR PBM equipment, technology that is backed by more than 60 years of scientific research. Designed to treat the head and scalp, the THOR Photomedicine Light Helmet targets brain injuries by stimulating neurogenesis, helping alleviate symptoms of dementia.
PBM is also effective in easing anxiety, depression, and stress by improving your emotional state.
According to THOR Photomedicine Ltd founder & CEO, James Carroll, 30 laboratory studies and six randomized human clinical trials have shown that PBM improves symptoms of Parkinson’s, Alzheimer's, and Major Depressive Disorder.
A 60-year-old client told Zhang that her 90-year-old father has severe Alzheimer's. Being genetically predisposed to the disease, the client wondered if she should start treatment.
“RegenClinic has treated numerous clients with diverse needs – from repetitive stress injuries and chronic back pain to wound healing and skin conditions – with many clients experiencing significant results,” says Zhang.
The clinic is also equipped with a NovoTHOR bed, which delivers a full-body treatment that addresses chronic pain and other ailments, and THOR LX2 handheld devices, which deliver focused, concentrated doses of PBM, ideal for treating injuries and wounds.
“Many clients who have chronic pain and depression experience feelings of renewal and well-being after just a few sessions on a twice-a-week treatment plan,” says Zhang. “They often leave happy and grateful, because their pain is reduced. Some do treatment combinations of 12 minutes in the NovoTHOR bed, and 10-15 minutes with the helmet."
Healing health results
Quinn, 24, has struggled with chronic pain and depression most of his life. Since beginning treatment at RegenClinic, however, he says he has experienced improvements to his mental health, and relief from chronic fatigue, depression, and pain. “I was surprised how good I felt after only one session,” Quinn says. Even discomfort from his herniated disc injuries, seem less pronounced, he adds.
“I'm not chained to a state of feeling depressed, but have a much brighter and lighter view of my daily life," says massage practitioner Philippa, 66, after her third NovoTHOR bed treatment for chronic pain for knees, hip and shoulder injuries, plus inflammatory effects from COVID vaccines. “I have much more energy and move with a lot less pain, which debilitated me.”
