Shamrocks edge Timbermen in WLA derby

The Island derby in the Western Lacrosse Association turned into a tight one Sunday.

Arthur Miller’s second goal of the game, with 36 seconds remaining, gave the Victoria Shamrocks a 10-9 victory over the Nanaimo Timbermen at Frank Crane Arena in the Harbour City.

The Shamrocks overcame a 4-1 first-period deficit to tie the game 8-8 at the end of the second period. Miller, Tom Vaesen and Nick Preston scored twice each for Victoria with Marshal King, Cole Pickup, Patrick Dodds and Denton Macdonald scoring once each. Jesse King had three assists for the Shamrocks to be named game first star. Victoria goaltender Chris Origlieri made 32 saves to be named game third star.

Zach Manns led Nanaimo with two goals and four assists, while Jon Phillips added two goals and three assists, to be named game second star. Jason Knox and Taggart Clark scored twice each for the Timbermen.

Undefeated Victoria moved to 4-0 on the season heading into Friday night’s game at the Q Centre against the Burnaby Lakers (3-1). The Timbermen (1-2) are in Coquitlam on Saturday night to play the Adanacs (1-3).
