Vancouver Island FC recorded its first victory in franchise history Sunday.
What was most impressive is that it was a rally win on the road against the defending Women’s Premier Soccer League champion Seattle Sounders.
The hosts took the lead before Natalie Cavallin levelled for Vancouver Island. Former pro and University of Victoria Vikes star Liz Gregg scored the winning goal for the 2-1 win.
VIFC was coming off a 2-0 loss last week to the Shadow in Spokane in the first game in franchise history.
The WPSL, in its 23rd season, has more than 100 clubs spread across North America and is the largest women’s soccer league in the world. The Sounders beat Pensacola FC of Florida 3-1 in the 2018 WPSL championship game in Norman, Oklahoma.
Vancouver Island FC is opening the season with four road games in the West Region Northwest Conference, continuing with games June 8-9 at Renton and Issaquah, Washington.
The first home fixtures are June 15-16 at Westhills Stadium against Westside Timbers and OSA FC. The final two regular-season home dates are at Goudy Field on June 30 against the Eugene Timbers and July 6 versus the TSS Rovers.
