A new area code is coming to British Columbia.
The 257 area code will be rolled out in May 24, 2025, to meet demand for new phone numbers, joining the code roster of 236, 250, 604, 672 and 778.
Decided by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC), the introduction of the area code will be gradual for consumers and businesses who request a new phone number, according to a Wednesday CRTC release.
Millions of new telephone numbers will be created without affecting existing ones, the CRTC said.
The new 257 code will not affect geographical boundaries for local calling areas, long distance calls or the dialling of special numbers like 911.
