People picking up or dropping off travellers at Vancouver International Airport (YVR) now have complimentary parkade access for 30 minutes.
On Nov. 4, YVR said drivers dropping off travellers at the airport's curb increased congestion, impacting traffic flow in and out of the area and the overall guest experience.
To rectify this, the airport will allow drivers to use the parade for free for under 30 minutes to pick up or drop off travellers.
YVR has also introduced new hourly and daily parking rates for the parkade. Unfortunately for drivers, these rates have increased.
Each additional 30 minutes of parkade use is $14, with a daily maximum of $65. These rates increased from $5.50 for a half hour and $11 hourly. The maximum rates for each day were capped at $40 (see slide three for old rates).
Travellers using the Gateway Valet parking can enjoy reduced prices. The new price is $28 hourly with a one-time $20 valet fee. Previously, it was $50 hourly plus the one-time $20 valet fee. The daily maximum spend is $65 plus a one-time $20 valet fee.
The rate changes went into effect on Wednesday, Nov. 13, just after midnight.
Why has YVR changed its parking fees?
YVR stated in a release that the parkade is "best suited for hourly stays" and picking up or dropping off travellers. By offering complimentary half-hour usage, visitors can enjoy the service close to the terminal without affecting traffic in the area by waiting at the curbside.
Travellers who will only be gone a short time may also enjoy being near the terminal.
The airport is not changing fees for its JetSet or Value Long-Term parking lot options.
The JetSet YVR Parking is the next most convenient option with a free valet service but travellers must take a free shuttle from the car drop-off to the airport. Prices for the lot vary based on availability
The Value Long Term is by the Templeton Canada Line Station and is the lowest-priced option. Travellers will only have to take the train for one stop and then the train takes them directly to the airport. A shuttle is provided outside of TransLink hours. The price is $4.25 hourly or $27.50 daily (see slide two for map).
