Mayfair Shopping Centre will celebrate its 50th anniversary with historical exhibits, contests and a special lounge to pamper shoppers. The events get underway on Friday and continue through next week.
When Mayfair opened its doors in October 1963, it was Vancouver Island’s largest integrated retail complex. Originally home to anchor tenant Woodward’s department store as well as food supermarket, a service station and 26 specialty shops, Mayfair has grown from an open-air mall to an enclosed shopping centre featuring unique retailers on the Island.
Visitors to Mayfair can take a walk down memory lane at an archival exhibit in Centre Court. The gallery-style display celebrates the milestones of Mayfair and features images and trends from Mayfair’s early days.
Shoppers are also being asked to “discover what decade suits your style” and enter to win a $5,000 shopping spree.Visit Mayfair’s Facebook page and enter the contest at the kiosk at the concierge desk. The contest runs in the mall and online from Friday to Oct 20.
On Oct. 18, shoppers who spend $100 during the anniversary week get a VIP pass to the Style Lounge, where guests will sip a custom Mayfair mocktail while enjoying a mini-manicure, hair and beauty makeovers. From 5 to 8 p.m., there will be complimentary light bites and mocktails while a DJ spins the sounds from the 1960s to today. A fashion presentation starts at 7 p.m. hosted by local stylist Khloe Campbell, on how fashion trends over the last 50 years are influencing current styles.
