Unemployed people in B.C. who are looking for skills training so they can find work can now apply for extra tuition help from the provincial government.

The province is increasing the maximum amount of tuition available to individuals to $7,500 from $4,000.

Jobless people can apply for the money through the Employment Program of B.C., where advisers will help link job seekers with the right programs. The money is available for training programs that address an identified labour-market need.

Meanwhile, the government is putting an extra $1.8 million into a program to help First Nations people get skills training.

This money will go to public, private and aboriginal-controlled organizations to help deliver job-related training in essential skills and introductory trades, along with mentoring, coaching and other supports.
