Improvements to accessibility at Victoria International Airport have earned the facility recognition from the Rick Hansen Foundation.

“This achievement is the result of more than a year of work by the team to evolve the airport to this level of certification,” Geoff Dickson, president and chief executive of the Victoria Airport Authority, said Thursday.

The airport has received a certified gold rating from the foundation. It is only the second B.C. airport and the fourth in the country to hold the rating.

Airport staff worked with Douglas Copley, of Copley Inclusive Solutions, to guide the facility through the adjudication process with the foundation.

Features at the Victoria airport include:

• Accessible parking close to accessible entrances

• Clear width, firm, stable and slip-resistant outdoor paths

• Clear directional signs including international pictograms

• Accessible washrooms with automated doors and emergency call systems, plus a dedicated adult changing washroom, and pet relief areas inside and outside

• Accessible interior ramps

• Tactile markings on signs

• Accessible self-serve kiosks with priority access

• Versatile seating

• Assisted listening technology
