Drivers are being warned to take care on Island highways after a fog advisory was issued for Wednesday morning into the afternoon.

The advisory is in effect for the Southern Gulf Islands and East Vancouver Island.

Environment Canada says a ridge of high pressure remains over the region, creating favourable conditions for low clouds and dense fog.

The fog is expected to dissipate later in the day but may linger near the water and in low-lying areas — and it could re-form again in the evening, the weather agency says.

At Vancouver International Airport, there has been at least one departure flight cancelled this morning, although most other departures remain on schedule while a number of arriving flights have been delayed.

Environment Canada says motorists are also advised to take extra caution due to a possible sudden drop in visibility.

DriveBC is reporting limited visibility due to dense fog on several Vancouver Island highways.
