Another possible cougar sighting reported in Saanich on Friday

Saanich police advised anyone walking in the area of 10 Mile Point to be aware of their surroundings and be careful with their pets.

A second possible cougar sighting of the week in Saanich was received by police about 6 a.m. Friday.

The sighting was on 10 Mile Point’s Spring Bay Road and has been has been reported to the Conservation Officer Service.

Saanich police advised anyone walking in the area to be aware of their surroundings and be careful with their pets.

On Thursday, a Gordon Head resident reported a possible sighting of a cougar in a tree about 2 a.m. on Hartwood Place, off Larchwood Drive.

The Conservation Officer Service was also notified in that case.

Central Saanich police also reported a cougar sighting on Thursday morning, along the beach at the end of Stelly’s Cross Road.

The incidents follow two cougar sightings in Saanich this past weekend, including one on Saturday at the University of Victoria.

On Sunday, a cougar cub was spotted in South Valley Park, west of Interurban Road near Panama Flats, Saanich police said. An adult cougar was believed to have been heard nearby.

In the event of a cougar encounter, the B.C. Conservation Officer Service advises keeping the animal in front of you at all times. Running or turning your back is not advised.

If a cougar shows interest or begins following you, respond with aggression and maintain eye contact. Increase your profile by raising your hands, the service says.
