A Greater Victoria transit bus displayed an emergency message saying “call 911” on Sunday morning after an alarm switch was accidentally activated, B.C. Transit says.

A social-media user posted that it happened on the No. 27 bus, which travels between Gordon Head in Saanich and downtown.

The alarm switch, which can only be activated by the driver, triggers the message on the outside of the bus when the situation on board does not allow a driver to request help through other means, B.C. Transit spokesman Jamie Weiss said.

Someone who saw the message called police, which is what anyone who sees the emergency message should do, Weiss said.

The driver reset the switch to remove the message, he said. Some transit buses can be reset by the driver, while others must return to the depot.

The use of the emergency-message system is rare on B.C. Transit buses, Weiss said.
