A driver with insurance that had expired in July 2023 was found by Oak Bay police using an automated licence-plate reader.

Police were using the infrared device on Cadboro Bay Road on Sept. 26 to scan plates and compare them to ICBC and police databases.

The device detected a vehicle with inactive insurance and a traffic stop was made.

The 25-year-old driver was issued a $598 ticket for not having insurance and a $109 ticket for failing to display an N sign indicating he has a novice licence.

The vehicle was towed from the scene.
