Two people escaped a fire that destroyed a home on Cowichan First Nation land Wednesday afternoon.

“They managed to make it out unharmed,” said Chief Martin Drakeley of the North Cowichan Fire Department, which was called to the fire about 2 p.m.

Drakeley, the first person on the scene, said the house was “fully involved” when he arrived. Duncan and Cowichan Bay crews also responded.

“It was a complete loss,” he said.

Hydro lines downed due to the fire affected access at first, Drakeley said.

Emergency Social Services is helping the displaced occupants.

The blaze is under investigation by North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP, Cowichan First Nation representatives and fire officials.
