B.C.’s Independent Investigations Office has been notified after a man was found dead Tuesday afternoon near Lake Cowichan following an armed robbery.
B.C. RCMP said the case began when the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP detachment was notified about 2:30 p.m. regarding an armed robbery at a business north of Duncan.
Officers located the suspect’s vehicle, but lost sight of it as it proceeded through Duncan.
The Island District Emergency Response Team was called in and found the vehicle at 4 p.m. parked east of Lake Cowichan. They approached the vehicle and found a man dead from what appeared to be self-inflicted wounds.
The Independent Investigations Office is a civilian-oversight agency that probes police-related incidents resulting in serious harm or death, and will determine what part, if any, police action or lack of action had in the incident.
